I Will Always Have

I will always have-1
Of the more than two hundred photos I shot during the gym drill at my daughter’s school this afternoon, this one stood out to me — most likely because of the words that go with it. The young woman, the peer-selected all-school captain, was delivering her speech. The bars on her sash which confirm that she’s a senior led me to expect a graduation-type speech replete with “words of wisdom.” Instead, I was struck by her powerful use of a phrase her English teacher had challenged a class to finish, “I will always have . . . .” It brought tears to my heart as I remembered my last year in my all-girls high school in Jamaica before my family emigrated to the U.S. I didn’t graduate from that school and I am now a naturalized U.S. citizen, but I will always have . . . .
