Minus One

Another from the “Mexico Series.” I love the day-in-the-life-of quality of this image. We strongly encouraged, aka forced, the kids to explore Valladolid beyond the zócalo and ended up on this quiet neighborhood square. It wasn’t that far from the city center, but at the time of day it felt well off the beaten path. My daughter gave me the idea for this title. She looked at the image and said, “Minus one” — as in P. plus M. minus her one, sitting apart. I immediately thought of the minus one always behind the camera, me, and rarely in the images. But really, when I look at my images, particularly those of my family, I always feel present. Plus one.
